Is it illegal to claim to be a Republican while running for office?

Posted on October 22nd, 2011 by admin1 in running for republican office

Who would want to be republican? I know. But since it’s easier to get things fixed by having people running for presidency/Senate/ not be republican, then would be illegal to claim to be Republican but not be on the agreement at all with republicans about pretty much anything. Lol; sort of trolling republicans XD But serious question, this is killing me.

There is a difference between legal and ethical . Illegal No Un- Ethical Yes

Beyond the trolling (bad you) this is a funny question since I have seen this happen in the past. Mind you the guy wasn’t claiming to be a Republican.

Back about oh, four or six (given the way congress works) years ago, one of my state’s senators ran on a Democrat ticket and was elected as a Democrat State senator. About three months or so into his term of office, he had a massive falling out with the state’s Democratic party and, (to use the vernacular) "jumped ship." He resigned his affiliation with the Democratic party, and signed up with the Republican party.

His constituents who had voted him into office naturally threw a fit, and called for him to be removed from office. This went all the way to the state’s supreme court, where the justices decided in a 8-3 vote that what he did wasn’t grounds for his dismissal. The court ruled that in the long run the party affiliation didn’t really mean anything on paper, since his voting record hadn’t changed. All he had changed was party affiliation and nothing more.

Now, they tried to get the US supreme court to take up this case, but the high court refused to hear the case. Typically when that happens, it’s the Supreme Court’s way of saying that they do not feel the case is worth hearing, or that they support the decision of the lower court.

So there you go. I hope that answers the question.References :

no, there are plenty of people who run on the republican ticket who are in love with the democrat agenda and platform: olympia snowe, susan collins, lindsay graham, dick lugar, jon hutsman…References :
