What are your thoughts in these quote from a former Republican President?

Teddy Roosevelt:

"Just as the special interest of cotton and slavery had threaten the nations integrity before the civil war, so now the great special business interest who often control and corrupt the men and methods of government for their own profit."

"The Constitution does not give the right of suffrage to any corporation. The citizens of the United States must effectively control the mighty Commercial forces which they have called into being."……

"Laws should be passed to prohibit the use of corporate funds directly or indirectly for political purposes. Corporate expenditures for political purposes have supplied one of the principle sources of corruptions in our political affairs."

If a Democrat had made this speech today he would be called a Socialist, communist or accused of being against the "Free Market," by the Republican party?

What happened to the Republican party?

It’s a different era with different problems. Take Teddy’s reference to corporate contributions to political parties as an example. That remark was made before labor unions came on to the scene. Labor has had a hand in politics, and just as influential as big business for as long as many of us can remember. The results of which have been damaging to the political landscape.

To correct this, Congress has evened the playing field by loosening the reigns for corporations.

The Republican party at that time hated Teddy Roosevelt. The Republican party had already become a puppet of the big money corporations. Nothing changes.References :

Roosevelt seems to be quoting the Constitution but ignoring the first amendment.

I do not like lobbyists, not those that lobby for the democrats nor those that lobby for the republicans but the 1st amendment does give the right of petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

I may not like it, you may not like it but this is exactly what the lobbyist are doing. They have grievances and go to congress to address the issues.

Roosevelt should have been looking at an amendment to exclude corporate funding of candidates.

I don’t see these as social issues nor communist, I see the removal of these provisions to be social or communist because it limits what we are entitled to do.

What happened to the Republican Party? well my guess is that we still honor the constitution, we still believe that people, regardless of them owning a business have the right to redress of grievances.

Apparently liberals are not all that happy with it.References :
