Republicans claim they want less government. Less interference in business. Less regulation. Less taxes. Why, then, are they quick to run to government for handouts? We see the handouts in the form of government subsidizing everywhere from the farming industry to the airline industry . We see it within the auto industry to the software industry. We bail out banks, savings & loans, and investment firms.
We bail out these businesses because they have failed due to poor business decisions. Meanwhile they continue to give the very CEO’s making these devastating decisions record bonuses. In bankrupts courts, judges are allowing bonuses to these executives, despite the fact the company will leave unpaid money it owes to it’s employees, its creditors, and sometimes even its customers. No doubt most CEO’s and executives are Republicans who oppose so-called socialistic Dems like Obama.
My question is “Why are free-market Capitalistic Republicans” in favor of this kind of socialism? Why do pro-business Republicans support Corporate welfare yet claim Obama’s platform is some form of Marxism?

Johnny Reb: Lincoln didn’t say that (though he is incorrectly given credit). Rev. Boetscher said that 75 years ago.

And to those who blame the Dems for the bailouts: my gosh, you are certainly so far up the Reps behinds that you want to blame it all on the Dems. It is NOT the Dems who bail out, it is the Federal Reserve who does it.

Additionally, I never once mentioned a Republican politician. Not once. I am complaining about the REPUBLICAN VOTER. Those fat cats who live in their multi million dollar homes paid for by the sweat of the workers under them and subsidized by MY (and your) tax dollar. Wake up. Unless you have been featured Fortune 500, the Rep politicians DO NOT REPRESENT YOUR INTERESTS.
What do you call giving subsidies to industries? Isn’t that a form of socialism? and if you have a link to refute my question, then post it. And not a right wing rag like the Washington Examiner. Or giving pharma the rights to medicare part D.

I think the Republicans will call anything socialism if it isn’t a handout to their own personal interests.

Sounds like the lobbyists for companies like Fed Ex and UPS are trying to push out the Post Office. How’s that Free Market thing working out for you guys?

Repubs are trying to privatize everything. The main reason is to destroy unions in this country. They hate Unions because Unions stick up for the working class and repubs hate the working class. We need a party strong enough to fight these thugs and their billionaire backers.

Previously their was an article, small one about her recent talk in Hong Kong giving one of those brilliant speeches she gives. She is such a smart women. Going to China I bet she knew more about US policy than Obama!
Sept. 23 was a hazy day in Hong Kong. It’s unlikely that Sarah Palin could have gazed across the city’s harbor, past the mountains of the New Territories, and spied mainland China in the distance. Secluded inside the Grand Hyatt hotel, behind a tight cordon of security and a sea of hobnobbing fund managers, she may not even have seen much of Hong Kong itself.

Sarah Palin Goes to Asia
Where Palin Made Her Name
Look Who’s Talking: Palin Opens Up

Palin was in the Big Lychee on her first visit to Asia, delivering her first major speech abroad at a high-profile conference of bankers and regional finance executives. A reported 1,100 delegates crammed into the ballroom to hear her champion "commonsense conservatism" and Reaganomics and offer commentary on Asian geopolitics. But if this luncheon keynote address was the former Alaska governor’s first credential-burnishing step toward a 2012 presidential bid, it was made with the pesky media well at arm’s length. All press were barred from the event, reportedly at the request of Palin’s camp. Details of her remarks have been pieced together from interviews with delegates who were in attendance, tweets from inside the ballroom and a few private recordings of the proceedings that were obtained by news agencies. Neither spokespersons for Palin or CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, the investment firm sponsoring the conference, were willing to disclose Palin’s itinerary in Asia.
(See the top 10 Sarah Palin spoofs.)

Though dubbed "a conversation with Sarah Palin," the event turned out to be more of a monologue. She spoke for almost 90 minutes, all the way to 2 p.m., when the session was supposed to end. As an attendee said while walking out, "she clearly wanted to keep talking so there’d be no questions." The moderator did ask her a few questions, but that part of the program lasted less than 10 minutes.
(See pictures of Sarah Palin.)

She did make a few memorable pronouncements, for example, "I don’t like excessive partisanship." Addressing the financial crisis, she declared there was no need for new regulation: "Lack of government wasn’t the problem. Government policies were the problem. The markets didn’t fail. Government failed." Palin reportedly called for the elimination of capital gains and estate taxes, decried state overspending and, supposedly without mentioning U.S. President Barack Obama by name, criticized his efforts to widen government involvement in health care. She rattled off a few terms of financial art but did not address the issues facing the markets for long, saying, "That’s for next time."
(See what Sarah Palin is planning next.)

Palin did not shy away from addressing Asia and its politics. She hit the Republican talking points on China, warning against protectionism and expressing concern about China’s military buildup. "We hope for China to rise responsibly," a delegate posting to Twitter live from the speech quoted Palin as saying. She also spoke of the U.S.’s historic role in securing prosperity and stability in the region and expressed a conviction that the U.S. could help steer Beijing toward democracy.

Still, according to many delegates, Palin’s home state of Alaska dominated the talk. "She rambled on about the place for ages," says an Indian banker with a major U.S. firm. "Palin even talked about Alaska’s land bridges with Asia and how animals once went across." Based on a recording it reviewed, the Wall Street Journal says Palin invoked her husband Todd’s Eskimo heritage as a sign of shared "bloodlines" between the continents.

Palin’s audience was a mostly sympathetic throng of high-flying executives and fund managers from more than 32 countries, responsible for some $10 trillion worth of assets among themselves. While they welcomed her support for strong free-market policies, some of the executives in the crowd were not entirely convinced. "[Palin] displayed a mixture of commonsense prudence and a bit of naiveté when it comes to finance," says a London-based fund manager (most delegates spoke anonymously due to the confidentiality policies of their companies). "Surely, we know now not all things are better left to the market."

After stepping down as governor earlier this year, Palin has allegedly received more than 1,000 speaking invitations. Some speculate that she was well remunerated by CLSA, though the company spokeswoman, Simone Wheeler, refused to comment on the question of a fee. The CLSA Investors’ Forum has a rich tradition of bringing in leading global — and often American — figures, such as Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Preceding Palin as top-of-the-bill speakers
on Monday and Tuesday were the Harvard financial historian Niall Ferguson and Robert Fisk, a veteran British correspondent in the Middle East. "Our speakers do not fit a specific formula," says Wheeler. "We just want to present our forum with newsmakers, with people who think outside the box. We want to air their virgin views."

But as the foreign press flapped about Palin (and the lack of access to her), few in the local Cantonese media — or most Hong Kongers, in general — seemed to care. Few representatives from Hong Kong’s tabloid-driven press stood in the forlorn journalist pen outside the hotel. Shown a picture of Palin, a woman surnamed Ng, who operated a food stand near the Grand Hyatt, professed to not know who she was. "If she is rich and famous, then maybe she goes shopping nearby," said Ng from behind her counter. "Afterward, she can come eat my fishballs."
FOR ALL YOU LIBBIES ASKING WHY SHE DIDN’T LEAVE ROOM FOR QUESTIONS OR LET THE STORY BE RECORDED, IT’S CUS
SHE DOESN’T WANT FOREIGN PEOPLE QUESTIONING HER OK! DEAL WITH IT SHE IS AMAZING!.
SHE IS SO SMART YOU DON’T NEED TO GO TO HARVARD TYO BE AS SMART AS SHE IS SHE INSPIRES ME AND MAKES ME HAPPY AND I THINK THAts why YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR HER CUS SHES A MAVERICK AND SHE’S GONNA WHIP THINGS UP!

Yes, she is smart.

When in fact, it hasn’t been. It’s not finalized and there are still many things to iron out. Many of the conservatives are voicing concerns and want to make certain that we, the taxpayers get a better deal than what’s presently being proposed.

Excerpts:

But there were fresh signs of trouble in the House Republican Caucus. A group of GOP lawmakers circulated an alternative designed to attract private capital back into the credit markets with less government intrusion.

Under the proposal, the government would provide insurance to companies that agree to buy frozen assets, rather than purchase them directly as envisioned under the administration’s plan. The firms would have to pay insurance premiums to the Treasury Department for the coverage.

"The taxpayers haven’t done anything wrong," said Rep Eric Cantor, R-Va., adding that rather than require them to bear the cost of the bailout, the alternative "pretty much puts the burden on Wall Street over time."

Rep. John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, the minority leader, was huddling with McCain on the rescue. Earlier, asked whether the GOP presidential nominee could corral restive Republicans to support the plan, Boehner said, "Who knows?"

And Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama, the only House Republican in the bargaining meeting, did not directly say he agreed with the other lawmakers who emerged describing an imminent deal.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080925/ap_on_bi_ge/financial_meltdown

The headline of this link is quite deceptive. They’re getting close to reaching an agreement, but there are still many things to be worked out.

The Republicans are the only ones voicing opposition to this plan… the American people are either very against it or think that they are powerless to do anything about it… there are also a few who, for some unknown reason, think that going $5 trillion in debt (according to current estimates of what this bill is actually going to cost us… do the research) is the only way to solve this crisis.

Things are getting bad for America:

China has told its banks to stop lending to America

http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSPEK16693720080925

Germany now says the USA will lose financial superiority..

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE48O2L020080925

We all should be very interested in where this is all going…

AP GSPC 940.55 -5.88

WASHINGTON – Freddie Mac secretly paid a Republican consulting firm $2 million to kill legislation that would have regulated and trimmed the mortgage finance giant and its sister company, Fannie Mae, three years before the government took control to prevent their collapse.

In the cross hairs of the campaign carried out by DCI of Washington were Republican senators and a regulatory overhaul bill sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. DCI’s chief executive is Doug Goodyear, whom John McCain’s campaign later hired to manage the GOP convention in September.

Freddie Mac’s payments to DCI began shortly after the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee sent Hagel’s bill to the then GOP-run Senate on July 28, 2005. All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it.

In the midst of DCI’s yearlong effort, Hagel and 25 other Republican senators pleaded unsuccessfully with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., to allow a vote.

"If effective regulatory reform legislation … is not enacted this year, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole," the senators wrote in a letter that proved prescient.

Unknown to the senators, DCI was undermining support for the bill in a campaign targeting 17 Republican senators in 13 states, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. The states and the senators targeted changed over time, but always stayed on the Republican side.

Care to blame Obama on this, too?
Born And Bred USA troll, this was not congress. This was the US Senate. Do you know the difference between the Senate and House of Reps?

I maintain that there is graft and corruption on both sides of the aisle. I also maintain that the crash of our financial system is a direct result of corruption, bitter partisan politics, and infighting that cover the Clinton and the Bush administrations.

We don’t need change, we need a revolution.. VOTE THEM ALL OUT… WE NEED ALL NEW FACES IN WASHINGTON. That’s the only thing that makes sense.

Surely the market follows economic laws as outlined by Adam Smith in "The Wealth of Nations". There is no "intelligent design" of the economy. Similarly laws operate in biology as well (ie. natural selection). Living organisms adapt to changes in the environment, just as firms adjust to changes in the market. There is constant adaptation.

"The hypothetical [ecosystem] planner that I have imagined is a certain king of economist, a welfare economist calculating an optimum strategy for a whole population, or an entire ecosystem. If we must make economic analogies [of natural selection], we should think instead of Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand’. " – Richard Dawkins

NB: I am referring to the creationists’ pseudo-scientific ideas, not their religious or moral beliefs, so keep things in perspective. Economics and biology follow laws whether you believe in God or not.

The only person who I know who doesn’t believe in evolution voted for Obama. She was a redhead girl I knew. She was cute. Just saying.

Here are my beliefs:

-I absolutely HATE illegal immigration and we should defend our
borders at ALL costs. The illegal immigrants already existing here should be
deported.

-I support the constitution and all of its components 100%

-I hate it when democrats tout that we must help the poor and tax the rich.

-I am a firm believer of the American dream. As in ANYONE can do it as long as they had the motivation to do so.

-I hate it when Democrats/Liberals use the "poverty cycle" as an excuse

-Marijuana should NOT be legalized

-End terrorism

-We should protect the environments and preserve wildlife at all costs.
Hunting is permitted as long as it doesn’t interfere with the ecosystem.

-Welfare fraud shall be eliminated.

-Little to no involvement in foreign affairs.

-CAPITALISM

-Free market; less government.
I’m not old enough to vote but I have helped a local congressman on their campaign serving under the Republican-Conservative title.
You guys are giving me so many answers….provide support.

You see, conservative is an idea and republican is an organization. I personally am a liberal, but certainly not a democrat.

Independent registration is the way to go, the founding fathers themselves feared and wanted to ban political parties in elections.

Also be sure to read the constitution if you support it as much as you do, or you will be subject to a politician’s interpretations of it (which are usually twisted to back up their own beliefs)

Conservatives generally believe in the idea that their should be freedom, but order always comes before freedom, i.e. banning pot, end terrorism, and even, in more extreme circumstances, censorship.

liberals believe in freedom as well, but they also believe that equality should always come before freedom, i.e. gay rights laws, civil rights laws, womens right laws, etc.

Communists and other totalitarians believe that Order and Equality always come before freedom, so every thing is equal, but there is generally no freedom.

Libertarians and anarchists believe that freedom should always come first, no matter what, which generally includes laissez faire government, unfortunately you will probably end up with a pay toll for every paved road considering the government wouldn’t own any of them XD

These are just the basic far ends of the political "square", a person can believe whatever they want. a moderate conservative might agree with legalizing pot, but might also agree with banning abortion, it’s all personal opinion.

rather than lauding the merits of the "declining value" of the dollar?
Republicans say the declining value of the dollar allows us to sell more products abroad. What they fail to point out is that the products they are selling are made in China.
China has tied its currency into the value of the USD. As the USD declines in value, so does their currency. They have done so to protect the jobs that were shipped there by US firms. After all, a declining dollar on the international currency market would make US labor cheaper than foreign labor.
China is using the global distribution network of US companies to sell their products worldwide. US comapnies are using China for cheap labor.
The American worker gets to short end.
So, a cheaper dollar does allow US companies to sell more goods abroad, goods that they are manufacturing in China.
As companies get to increase profits, you get to spend more money on food, energy, and most other staples.
Got to love Republican spin.
lol
Crude oil hitting $90 a barrel, foreclosures at an all time high, the USD at its lowest value ever on the currency market is all fabricated bad news.
OMG!

Well Bob, the inflation rate is calculated on the CPI "Consumer Price Index". The inflation rate is still low. The inflation that is currently present is mostly base on energy and nothing else. Had a democrat been in office they would have kept our taxes high and in a "lock box". The result would have been a longer recession felt in 2001, there would be low or no growth, and due to the previous, inflation would have taken hold. If you remember Carters administration and the evil "stagflation"! Same problem!

As a conservative I don’t believe that the declining value of the dollar is a good thing! If growth doesn’t keep up we will see inflation kick into high gear. Here are some positives, the global market has change and the success or failure of US based business are no longer dependent on our economy. Also, our economy for many years in a service based economy rather than a product based economy.
You mention the US worker gets the short end. That is true right now because we have too many people that do not want to spend their lives in college being retrained to meet the new demands. Sorry but gone are the days where a man can work at a broom factory for the rest of his life making broom handles. We live in a dynamic world now, not only do our business need to compete but our work force must compete.

Your quote, "As companies get to increase profits, you get to spend more money on food, energy, and most other staples."
OK I can understand the frustration but why can’t the average American take advantage of this? Last time I checked every American can invest and own a part of those profits. We take for granted the awesome situation we are in today! We have emerging markets in every corner of the world. I don’t care how much money a person has. They can start out with $500 dollars and become a millionaire. Mark my words Americans will look back at this time and wish they would have worked with the change rather than bitching about the problems. Then again most people will read this and think me a fool and that’s fine that’s the very reason why we have winners and losers in life.

What you mentioned about republicans is spin and we need to improve that situation. However I thank God everyday that Bush instead of Gore won the election! Our economy is better for it.

…………………………..
As for your addition, Oil went to $90 purly because the dollar devalued not becaue of a shortage. Oil futures are based on the value of the dollar as opposed to the Euro or the Loony. That move in price was due to speculators and will drop back down to resonable levels. Foreclosures happend because of people trying to bite off more than they can chew and the greed of sub-prime lenders. You can thank the federal reserve for that one! Thats not spin thats the truth!

GDP is still growing
We are at full employment
Inflation is low

The economy is still not that bad there are things we need to work on but we are better off!

A photo of Phelps smoking marijuana out of a bong at a party in November has brought his endorsement career to a crossroads, marketing experts say. And the megabucks that were flowing in could soon go down the drain unless America’s superstar swimmer, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games, changes his ways.

"It’s certainly not good and it’s a disaster in terms of the near future," said Robert Tuchman, president of Premiere Corporate Events, a sports entertainment firm. "He’s very unlikely to have new sponsors come on board and endorse him. And there’s the potential for other sponsors to pull the plug on him, using this is an opportunity. He’s going to take a big hit on this."

I think he was busted before for drunk driving. Typical Republican behavior.

He’s an American icon. It just proves stoners do have potential in society. Even Obama was a stoner. So it has nothing to do with political party.
